Thanks for your recent news coverage on the brown water from runoff in the Ala Wai Canal (“Rain increases Ala Wai Canal pollution, causes beach warning,” Star-Advertiser, Aug. 29).

Although I could be off, there are at least 5,000 to 8,000 high-rise apartment residents in Waikiki who look out onto Ala Wai Canal, as their apartments align right along the Ala Wai Boulevard. For most, including myself, any runoff from rain at any time of the year results in a brown and very polluted Ala Wai Canal. It is always a tragic sight.

The continued pollution of the Ala Wai Canal should be a real issue of discussion and debate among the candidates now seeking election or re-election. They all should be challenged to come up with short-term and long-range solutions.
