Honolulu heads for Little League World Series

There’s something special about watching Little League baseball: the thrill of victory, or the agony of defeat, is particularly poignant as seen on the faces of young athletes aged 10 to 12.

Let’s definitely cheer for victory this week, as the Honolulu Little League heads into the Little League World Series (LLWS) in Williamsport, Pa. The team, which advanced after winning the 2018 West Region championship on Saturday, plays its first LLWS game at 2 p.m. Friday.

Hawaii teams have won the title twice before, sparking fan-demonium statewide in those championship years: in 2005 by the Ewa Beach team, then in 2008 by the Waipahu team. Runner-up titles came in 2010 — Waipahu again — and back in 1988, by Pearl City. Go, Hawaii!

Prosecutor still has Deedy in his sights

Seven years and two acquittals later, Christopher Deedy is still not done.

Honolulu Prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro wants to make another go at convicting Deedy, this time for manslaughter, despite Friday’s federal court ruling that it would be unconstitutional. Kaneshiro hopes the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will see things his way.

Deedy, a federal agent, was charged in 2011 for fatally shooting Hawaii resident Kollin Elderts in Waikiki. Kaneshiro maintains that it’s a moral imperative to “seek justice” for Elderts under the law. But there’s also the law of diminishing returns to consider.
