His State Capitol website looks lonely: Smiling back from a nearly blank page is state Sen. Jon Yoshimura’s sun-drenched face (the other mug shots are pallid studio standard poses). “No measures introduced,” it says.
Well, that’s not a fair comparison, right? The Legislature’s adjourned, and Yoshimura has just started, appointed to fill the seat vacated by lieutenant governor hopeful Will Espero. And he’s only on duty until General Election Day.
But the former City Councilman has experience fielding calls. So voters of District 19 with constituent issues, feel free: 586-6360.
Protecting home of false killer whales
A just-published rule by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration designates a section of waters between Niihau and Hawaii island as protected critical habitat for Hawaii’s estimated 150 false killer whales.
That’s heartening progress for the endangered species, which can reach lengths of 16 feet and weigh up to 3,000 pounds. Like their orca cousins, false killer whales are actually dolphins — and their curiosity is known to get them in trouble with fishing lines, resulting in unintentional hookings, entanglement and injuries. Kudos to the nonprofit Center for Biological Diversity for its eight-year push for species protection.
