Power restored to most customers after island-wide blackout on Molokai

Maui Electric said power has been restored to most customers on Molokai this evening after a blown roof led to an island-wide outage.

About 3,200 customers were without power after the outage started about 10 a.m. when a loose sheet of roofing flew into power lines, said Maui Electric spokeswoman Shayna Decker.

The incident brought down the power lines along Mauna Loa Highway near the landfill and recycling center and also caused a fault on the system, leading to damaged equipment at the Palaau Power Plant.

Maui Electric began restoring power to customers at about 4 p.m.

Decker said in an email that 314 customers in Kaluakoi were still without power at about 8:30 p.m. and Maui Electric crews were continuing to work to bring them back online.
