Oklahoma softball freshman Jocelyn Alo was named a first-team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Wednesday.
Alo, a Campbell High School graduate, was selected to the team as a utility player. Alo became the eighth freshman in Sooner history to be named an All-American as her team prepares for the Women’s College World Series.
The Hauula native also was named the NFCA Freshman of the Year on Tuesday. Alo led the Big 12 in home runs (nine), walks (17), runs scored (18), RBIs (25), total bases (46) and slugging percentage (.979) while finishing second in on-base percentage (.554). She leads the nation with 28 homers this season, two off the NCAA freshman record.
Chaminade adds pair of guards for 2018
Chaminade men’s basketball coach Eric Bovaird announced the signing of two junior college transfers to national letters of intent.
Telly Davenport, a guard from Idaho Falls, Idaho, joins Chaminade as a transfer from the College of Southern Idaho, where he helped CSI to a runner-up finish in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship tournament. Davenport has two years of eligibility remaining.
Roman Young comes to Chaminade from Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Mo. The 5-11 guard was a Region XVI and Midwest Community College Athletic Conference second-team selection in his lone season with the Cardinals, while helping them to a 23-9 record. He has three seasons of eligibility with Chaminade.
Local men’s surfers eliminated in Bali
Hawaii-born surfers John John Florence, Ezekiel Lau and Keanu Asing were all knocked out in Round 3 of the Corona Bali Protected in Keramas, Bali, Indonesia today.
Florence, the two-time WSL champion, was upset by Brazilian rookie Jesse Mendes 13.34-11.37 in the first heat of the round, while Lau went out in the second heat 15.17-12.97 to Tahiti’s Michel Bourez. Asing then lost in in the final heat of the round, falling 14.43-8.43 to Brazil’s Filipe Toledo.
No Hawaii men’s surfers are among the final 12, but four are alive on the women’s side and could compete as soon as Friday, surf permitting — Coco Ho, Tatiana Weston-Webb, Carissa Moore and Malia Manuel.
