The nonprofit Makiki Community Library will close June 9 and liquidate its assets by the end of the year, its governing organization said Sunday. The Friends of the Makiki Community Library said in a release that donations have not been enough to keep the library afloat.
President Wendy Maxwell said the nonprofit board was “very reluctant and deeply saddened” to reach the conclusion that the library in Makiki District Park must be shuttered. But she expressed hope that it could reopen as a state facility once talks with the Department of Land and Natural Resources come to fruition.
The assets to be liquidated include books, DVDs and furniture. The library opened in September 1976.
