Terminology around the just-passed University of Hawaii smoking and vaping ban is a bit messy. According to Senate Bill 134, current policy “prohibits smoking under certain circumstances, but the policy does not make all campuses smoke- and tobacco-free.” The assumption is that this bill, if signed into law by the governor, will accomplish that.
But while e-cigarettes are covered by the pending ban, they don’t produce smoke, and they have no tobacco. That’s why “tobacco product” had to be defined as “any product made or derived from tobacco that contains nicotine or other substances.” Bingo: E-cigs, you’re outta there.
Lots of political deck-shuffling this year
“52 Pickup” is an old joke masquerading as a card game: Toss the deck in the air. Now, victim, pick up the cards.
Election 2018 is going to look like that here. Whether or not there is change at the governor’s office, many of the politicos working beneath the fifth floor will be shuffled, if not replaced.
There will be new faces, especially in the House, with some state senators and representatives running for higher office. Lots of movement, with aspirations from House to Senate, Senate to lieutenant governor, state Capitol to U.S. Capitol.
Voters, it’s up to you to keep the new deck joker-free.
