Tsunami threat never ends

Mayor Kirk Caldwell held a news conference Wednesday at Honolulu Hale to help raise awareness about the threat posed by tsunamis. Melvin Kaku, director of the Department of Emergency Management, gestured to the poster behind him that had a 10-foot-high mark. Listed on the poster is a 37-foot tsunami recorded at Makapuu in 1947 and a 9-foot tsunami in Waikiki in 1960. Behind him are Gerrard Fryer, left, Kevin Richards, Dan Walker, Tammy Fukui, Paul F. Nahoa Lucas, Caldwell and Laura Kong.
