In the end, it seems, pragmatism got the better of progressive politics when it comes to the controversial “sanctuary city” bills.
Hawaii legislators declined to advance the measures, which would have limited local police cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The general intent of the bills would have disallowed police here from stopping or arresting anyone based solely on an immigration hold or immigration warrant.
The pragmatism comes into focus when realizing that Hawaii is depending on billions of essential federal dollars to complete Oahu’s overbudget rail project and for a slew of local programs ranging from health and human services to highways. Also: The U.S. Justice Department just last month sued California over its sanctuary laws. Talk about intimidation.
WalletHub: We’re not the best place for millennials
Hawaii snagged a lamentable No. 1 ranking in the category of highest cost of housing, in WalletHub’s “2018 Best & Worst States for Millennials” statistical report. In the metric of lowest home ownership, we were No. 50, with Washington, D.C., finishing dead last.
The survey of early-20-to-early-30-somethings ranked the District of Columbia as the overall best pick due to high scores in education and health, quality of life and civic engagement. Hawaii was No. 38 overall, with a few bright spots — No. 3 for highest percentage with health insurance coverage; and No. 4 for lowest percentage with depression.
