Brazil’s Italo Ferreira and Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore took home victories at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach on Thursday at Bells Beach, Australia.
Ferreira knocked off Australia’s Mick Fanning 15.66 to 12.83 in the finals, while Gilmore edged Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb by scores of 14.17 to 13.94.
The event also marked the end of the career of the three-time WSL Champion Fanning, who was surfing in his final event after 17 years.
Melounova earns weekly honors
Sophomore Petra Melounova of the University of Hawaii women’s tennis team was named the Big West women’s tennis athlete of the week on Wednesday.
This marks the third time this season and fifth time in her career that Melounova has received the honor.
Melounova went undefeated in the Rainbow Wahine’s recent road trip against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. She also moved into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings for the first time this season on Tuesday, coming in at No. 65.
HPU women’s tennis ranked second
The Hawaii Pacific women’s tennis team came in at No. 2 in the first NCAA Division II West Region women’s tennis rankings, released Tuesday by the NCAA Division II women’s tennis committee.
The Sharks are 9-2 this season, and trail only conference rival Azusa Pacific (10-2) in the regional rankings. Azusa Pacific defeated HPU last week in the only scheduled meeting between the teams.
