Man arrested after shooting police officer
Hawaii County police arrested Thursday morning a 65-year-old Pahoa man, who was hiding in a shed behind his house, after allegedly shooting a police officer Wednesday night. Police were called at 10:22 p.m. Wednesday to a reported assault at the man’s home on Oio Street in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision. When officers approached, the man fired a single gunshot, hitting an officer in a “lower extremity,” police said.
The officer, a two-year member of the department, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center where he remained Thursday in stable condition. The police Special Response Team with crisis negotiators responded to the scene. Police arrested the man on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder.
