The University of Hawaii football team has secured a commitment from one of the top high school centers in the West.
Venasio “Solo” Vaipulu of Centennial High in Corona, Calif., told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he will sign a letter of intent with the Rainbow Warriors on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA’s spring-semester signing period for football prospects.
Vaipulu said he finalized his decision after his UH- sponsored recruiting visit.
“I loved everything,” Vaipulu said. “I loved the environment. I loved the coaches. I loved the vibe I was getting from the players and what they wanted to do with the program and where it was heading.”
Vaipulu said he is 6 feet 2 1/2 and 300 pounds.
He played all five line positions at Centennial. He was named the Big VIII’s 2017 lineman of the year as a center. Vaipulu said he projects to begin at guard for the Warriors. “Once I grow into the offense and learn more about it, I can transition into center for them,” Vaipulu said.
Brandon Huffman, the national football recruiting editor for 247Sports, described Centennial as “one of the best public programs in Southern California. He’s been the anchor of their offensive line.”
Huffman said Vaipulu has a 3-star rating, and is ranked 15th nationally among centers and fourth in the West.
“He’s real physical,” Huffman said. “He can play either guard spot, as well. I really like him as a center. He’s probably the most under-recruited lineman in Southern California because he’s a pure center. He’s a real bulldozer.”
Huffman said Vaipulu was impressive in the practices leading to last month’s Polynesian Bowl. “He was real physical,” Huffman said. “He brought the nasty to him.”
Vaipulu and UH running back Miles Reed were Centennial teammates. Former UH running back Mike Bass is a teacher and coach at the school.
In announcing his decision on Saturday, Vaipulu is fulfilling a promise to his father, whose birthday is today.
“I told him right after Christmas that I wanted to commit a day before his birthday or on his birthday,” Vaipulu said. “I’m excited.”
