South Korean tennis star Chung Hyeon arrived to a large crowd of fans at Incheon International Airport last week after an impressive showing at the Australian Open in Melbourne that catapulted him to celebrity status in his home country.
Chung, 21, is the first South Korean tennis player to reach a Grand Slam semifinal. He defeated former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic to get into the quarterfinals and then beat Tennys Sandgren to reach the semifinal, where he met the legendary Roger Federer. Unfortunately, Chung decided to withdraw due to blisters on his foot.
As a result of his successes, Chung’s ranking by the Association of Tennis Professionals jumped from 58th to 29th — the highest ever for a South Korean. His youth and newfound celebrity status are sure to provide a boost to the tennis industry in South Korea as he quickly becomes an idol for many youths interested in the sport.
