The Coast Guard is seeking the public’s help today in locating the owner of a green kayak floating adrift about a half-mile north of the mouth of the Wailua River on Kauai.

A mariner reported finding the unmanned two-person kayak at about 10:25 a.m. today, the Coast Guard said. The kayak had no lines attached and no gear onboard. There was no marine growth on its hull.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was dispatched to search the area for anyone in distress. There were no reports of missing persons in the area.

The Coast Guard also issued an urgent marine information broadcast asking mariners to keep an eye out for anyone needing help.

Anyone with information about the owner of the kayak is asked to call Coast Guard Sector Honolulu at 842-2600.

The Coast Guard urged owners of water sports equipment to write their names and phone numbers on their gear to help search-and-rescue planners. The Coast Guard also offers free “If Found” decals that can be placed on small watercraft.
