Offensive lineman Thomas Wade appears to have the necessary tools for success: intelligence, hand-eye coordination and problem-solving capabilities.
That was apparent when he built his own computer three years ago.
“It was pretty easy,” Wade said.
Wade, a senior at San Clemente (Calif.) High, hopes to combine those skills with strength and agility when he joins the University of Hawaii football team in June. Wade pledged to ink a letter of intent with the Rainbow Warriors on Feb. 7, the first day of the NCAA’s spring-semester signing period for football prospects.
“Just the culture, honestly,” Wade said of his college choice. “Hospitality wise, I just loved it. And also the work-hard determination of Hawaii (players) and, at the same time, they’re having fun and really enjoying it.”
Wade was a goalkeeper on San Clemente’s soccer team for two years. He plays recreational roller hockey. He said his “bloodline of football players is really big.” Two uncles — Ron Wade and Mike Wade — are members of San Clemente’s Hall of Fame.
“I do have bragging rights over them,” Wade said. “I have won a CIF state championship.”
The Tritons won the D1-A title in 2016. The program’s alumni include former USC quarterback Sam Darnold, guard Sean Harlow of the Atlanta Falcons, and tackle Kyle Murphy of the Green Bay Packers.
Wade began playing organized football in seventh grade. He now is nearly 6 feet 7 and 250 pounds. He said his goal is to weigh 275 pounds when UH’s training camp opens this summer.
“That would be the very, very happy goal,” Wade said. He said he eventually would like to weigh up to 310 during his UH career.
Colorado State, Boise State, UNLV and several FCS schools recruited Wade. He said Hawaii is similar to San Clemente’s beach community.
“It’s definitely one big family,” Wade said of San Clemente, which is at the base of Orange County. “You’ll walk around and you’ll see people you know from random events or random occasions. It’s a very tight-knit community. … (Hawaii) is definitely like San Clemente.”
Left tackle Dejon Allen and left guard John Wa‘a completed their UH eligibility at the end of the 2017 season. In December, the Warriors signed offensive linemen Kohi Levao of City College of San Francisco and Ilm Manning of Apollo High (Glendale, Ariz.).
