Mark Weber, who has 37 seasons of coaching experience, will be named the University of Hawaii football team’s offensive line coach, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser has learned.
An announcement is expected today.
Weber fills the vacancy created when Chris Naeole resigned as offensive line coach in the seventh week of the 2017 season. Offensive coordinator Brian Smith and graduate assistant John Estes coached the offensive line the rest of the season.
The Rainbow Warriors’ nearly three-month search led to nine finalists. Head coach Nick Rolovich interviewed each of them at last week’s American Football Coaches Association’s convention in Charlotte, N.C. In the end, Rolovich selected the one with the most experience and extended success.
In 2016, Weber was the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator at Fresno State, his second stint with the San Joaquin Valley school.
Prior to that, Weber was the assistant head coach at Utah State for three seasons through 2015, coaching 10 offensive linemen who earned All-Mountain West honors. In 2013, Tyler Larsen was named to USA Today’s All-America second team.
From 2007 through 2012, he coached the linemen at Brigham Young. The Cougars qualified for bowls in each of those six seasons.
In his first turn at Fresno State, a two-year stint, the Bulldogs averaged 40.2 points and 227.5 rushing yards per game in 2004. The following season, the Bulldogs averaged 37.8 points per game and allowed 14 sacks in 13 games, eighth fewest among Division I-A teams. Weber coached Logan Mankins, the New England Patriots’ first-round pick in 2005 who played in seven Pro Bowls, and Ryan Wendell, who played nine NFL seasons.
Weber also has coached at North Carolina, UCLA, Nevada and Oregon State.
UH is close to announcing a new defensive line coach and receivers coach. Defensive coordinator Legi Suiaunoa, who also coached the interior linemen, and receivers coach Kefense Hynson resigned last month to
accept coaching jobs at
Oregon State.
