The average hotel room size in the U.S. is said to be about 330 square feet. However, the trend among boutique brands is to trim room size and create more co-working and guest hangout spaces. Following suit, Kakaako developer Howard Hughes Corp. is poised to sell micro condo units at its ‘A‘ali‘i tower that come with access to a fitness center, communal dining and other amenities — with about half of the 741 units reserved for Hawaii residents who will own and occupy.
Before moving into studios, locals should get together for a communal garage sale as they’ll need to shed belongings to reside in ‘A‘ali‘i tower’s smallest units — 277 square feet to 373 square feet. The tiniest price tag: between $500,000 and $600,000. And that’s before monthly maintenance fees for the spiffy amenities.
