A 47-year-old Moorpark, Calif., man died Monday afternoon after being pulled from the water off Black Rock in Kaanapali.
According to the Maui Fire Department, the man was snorkeling with two family members. A paddler saw the victim waving and yelling for help about 50 feet from the point and joined another witness on shore to help the man to the rocks, where he lost consciousness.
The two performed CPR until firefighters and paramedics arrived. Despite continued lifesaving measures, the man did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rescued spearfisher in critical condition
A 58-year-old Waiehu man was in critical condition Saturday after he was rescued from waters off Papalaua Wayside Park in Ukumehame.
According to a Maui Fire Department report, the man was spearfishing about 100 yards offshore when he began waving his arms in distress. Two people on the beach used bodyboards to reach the man, who had lost consciousness, and brought him back to shore.
Witnesses performed CPR on the man until paramedics and firefighters arrived. The man was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Woman in crash was not wearing seat belt
A 37-year-old woman who died in a two-vehicle crash on Hawaii island has been identified as Lori Ann Sato of Papaaloa.
Sato died Saturday at Hilo Medical Center.
Shortly before 4 p.m. in Paauilo on Saturday, police said, a 2004 Honda sedan operated by Sato was traveling north on Highway 19 near the 34-mile marker. The sedan overtook another vehicle in a no-passing zone and was broadsided by a 1999 Toyota pickup traveling south.
Sato was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said a front-seat passenger of the Toyota, described as a 21-year-old Pepeekeo man, was transported in stable condition to North Hawaii Community Hospital.
The pickup truck driver, a 20-year-old Pepeekeo man, was uninjured.
Both the passenger and the driver were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Police said Sato was not wearing a seat belt.
This is the 30th traffic-related fatality on Hawaii island, the same number of traffic fatalities by this time last year.
Man critical after moped crash in East Oahu
A 55-year-old man was critically injured Monday in a moped crash on Kalanianaole Highway near Wailupe Circle. The crash happened around 2 p.m.
According to an Emergency Medical Services report, the man suffered head and body injuries and was transported in critical condition to a local trauma center.
Firefighters recover body off coast of Hilo
Hawaii island firefighters have recovered the body of a man along the coastline of Hilo Bay.
The partially decomposed body was recovered just before 1:40 p.m. Friday, about 35 feet below a cliff in Wainaku.
Police suspect the man could be George Novinger, of Spring Valley, Calif., who went over Rainbow Falls on Nov. 25.
