The Hawaii County Fire Department found the body of a male victim after extinguishing a fire at a two-story home in Kailua-Kona early Friday morning.
The department was alerted of a fire at 73-1083 Oluolu St. at 6:11 a.m. and responded with 29 firefighters from the Makalei station.
The four-bedroom house, measuring about 3,000 square feet, was fully engulfed, with the fire located at the back. It appears to have started downstairs, according to firefighters. The fire spread from the south side of the two-story residence, but no other surrounding homes were damaged.
Crews were able to control the fire and put it out by 7:10 a.m., then found a man’s body in the lower unit. An autopsy will determine the cause of death. The identity of the victim had not been determined, and the cause was still under investigation Friday.
Police asked anyone with information on the fire to call Detective David Matsushima at 326-4646, ext. 224.
Damage was estimated at about $210,000.
