“Let a thousand flowers bloom,” goes the old saying that welcomes independent thought and action. But when the blossoms are Hawaii’s 46 Democrats in the state House, they pretty much have to toe the line — or else.
The consequence for Hawaii island Rep. Cindy Evans, who voted against the rail project bailout, was being unseated as House majority leader. Interesting that nobody had to walk this plank in the Senate.
Perhaps it was just a vote of principle — rail being an Oahu-only project — or perhaps she took a reading of constituent views and, well, election year is coming.
UH-Manoa demonstrates pride in diversity
International students make up a small but prized slice of the University of Hawaii’s systemwide enrollment. Its flagship campus, UH-Manoa, known in higher ed circles for diversity, draws students from Hawaii, the mainland and more than 100 countries. So, it’s not surprising that — amid the latest travel restrictions announced by the White House — the UH is part of the #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign underway at more than 300 colleges and universities.
A video posted on the UH website features a welcoming message in 17 languages — along with lots of lei, cheerful ukulele accompaniment and flashing shakas. Our public university system’s commitment to diversity does the Aloha State proud.
