“Warning — Shark sighted, keep out.” Signs bearing that good advice have caused some excitement lately at Waimea Bay — and they’ve been heeded by most, though not all, beachgoers.

Multiple sharks have been seen thrashing in waters about 5 yards offshore, causing the warning signs to be posted since Monday for the second time in five days.

One news report had lifeguards estimating about a dozen sandbar sharks in the bay, perhaps feeding off dead tilapia.

The experts say it’s unusual to see sharks in Waimea Bay. So it follows that it’s even rarer to have an unfortunate encounter there between shark and human.

Let’s hope that remains so.
