A motorcyclist was taken to the hospital in critical condition Saturday after a crash in the eastbound lanes of the H-1 freeway in Aiea.
The crash occurred at about 1:30 p.m., and one person was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.
Police closed several lanes for about two hours so traffic officers could investigate, slowing eastbound traffic in the area.
At about 2:50 p.m., only two left lanes were open near the Aiea offramp, police said.
Police reopened all the lanes at about 3:50 p.m.
Woman nearly drowns off Waikiki Beach
A woman who appeared to be in her 30s was in critical condition Saturday after an apparent near-drowning in Waikiki, emergency responders said.
The incident happened just after 8 a.m. in the area of 2403 Kalakaua Ave., an Emergency Medical Services report said.
Lifeguards pulled the woman from the water off Waikiki Beach and began CPR.
Paramedics arrived and treated the woman before taking her to a hospital in critical condition.
Burning stove ignites home in Waipahu
A stove left on started a house fire that displaced a family of three and killed a pet dog Saturday in Waipahu, firefighters said.
The fire started at about 8:50 a.m. in the 94-200 block of Kihikihi Place while the family was away, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. David Jenkins.
Two people at the scene were treated for smoke inhalation, Jenkins said. It was not clear how the people were involved in the incident, but they were not firefighters, Jenkins said.
Paramedics said one of the two treated was a 42-year-old woman, who was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
The fire erupted after the kitchen stove was inadvertently turned on and ignited items left on the stove, Jenkins said. The flames then spread from the kitchen to other parts of the home.
About 25 firefighters responded and found light smoke coming from the attic of the two-story structure. Firefighters brought the fire under control within five minutes and extinguished it shortly afterward.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.
A damage estimate was not immediately available.
Hiker is airlifted after fall from utility pole
A 22-year-old hiker was in serious condition Saturday after touching a power line and falling about 30 feet in the Waianae Range.
The man was injured at about 12:10 p.m. on Mount Kaala Road.
An Emergency Medical Services report said the man apparently climbed a utility pole, then fell after touching the line and being shocked. The man sustained burns, but remained conscious and was treated by paramedics, who took him to a hospital in serious condition, the report said.
Honolulu fire Capt. David Jenkins said five companies responded to a call about a hiker in distress and found the man had fallen about 30 feet after touching the power line. Firefighters used a helicopter to pick up the man and take him to a landing zone at Kaneaki District Park, where he was transferred to paramedics.
Jenkins said it was not certain if the man was hiking with a group, but someone else at the scene called for help. It was not clear how the man had come into contact with the line, Jenkins said.
