They might not be as thrilling as those sleek hydroplanes racing across waters, but Hawaii’s cargo ships are poised to become a spectator sport for industry watchers.
TOTE Inc., sister company to Young Brothers, has plans to enter Hawaii with four new, more-environmentally-friendly ships in 2020 and 2021, but has yet to secure harbor container space. Meanwhile, PASHA, which began service here in 2005, has a fleet that includes four older ships that won’t meet new pollution rules come 2020; two smaller ships are on order. And then there’s 11-ship Matson, with its 135-year Hawaii presence, which will be replacing three older ships with four already on order.
Lots of jockeying to come. Dare consumers hope for ultra-competitive pricing? The tension mounts.
