An Oahu grand jury has indicted a 34-year-old man accused of causing serious injuries to two visitors in an October 2014 hit-and-run in Haleiwa.
Travis J. Atkinson was charged with two counts of accidents involving death or serious bodily injury and two counts of negligent injury in the first degree. He turned himself in Sunday night at the Honolulu Police Department’s Alapai Street headquarters. His bail has been set at $15,000.
The grand jury had issued a bench warrant for Atkinson after it indicted him in June on criminal charges. He’s also facing a civil lawsuit filed in October by the two visitors, a married couple from Japan.
Honolulu attorney Bert Sakuda, who is representing the visitors, said they are seeking uninsured-motorist benefits as Atkinson was not insured at the time of the hit-and-run. The lawsuit said the couple has suffered severe injuries and that their hospital bills in Hawaii alone total more than $190,000.
Shortly before 3 p.m. Oct. 26, 2014, Atkinson was traveling on Kamehameha Highway near Laniakea Beach when he veered off the road and sideswiped a parked car, causing injury to the occupant, according to police and the civil lawsuit.
He continued on and struck the couple, a 31-year-old woman and 35-year-old man. They were walking on the west shoulder of the highway to return to their rental car after they had stopped at Laniakea to see green sea turtles.
The couple was transported to The Queen’s Medical Center, where the woman was treated for injuries that included a fractured right leg, right elbow and left knee, and multiple cuts and bruises. Her husband sustained a broken left leg, subdural hematoma, broken vertebra, a broken eye socket and multiple cuts.
Police said Atkinson fled but was arrested about a half-hour later after a responding officer found him at Haleiwa Beach Park.
He had a blood-alcohol content of 0.21, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08. The suit also said Atkinson failed a field sobriety test, had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol.
Police released him the following day pending further investigation.
The woman remained hospitalized at Queen’s for two weeks. The couple returned to Japan, where she was hospitalized until she was discharged in the first week of February 2015.
