A prisoner died Tuesday at the Women’s Community Correctional Center in Kailua.
The state Department of Public Safety identified her as Jessica Fortson, 30, and said she was found in her cell Tuesday at about 8:20 p.m.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
Toni Schwartz, spokeswoman of the state Department of Public Safety, said Fortson was found by a correctional officer. “At this point, I’m going to leave the proper determination of the cause of death to the medical examiner,” she said.
The correctional officer performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Fortson until medical staff arrived. Emergency Medical Services responded and transported her to a nearby hospital.
Police said Fortson’s condition deteriorated and she was pronounced dead at 9:23 p.m. There were no signs of foul play.
Schwartz said an internal investigation is underway.
Fortson was a minimum-custody inmate serving a five-year sentence begun in 2015 for fraudulent use of a credit card, identity theft and unauthorized possession of confidential information. Her next parole hearing was scheduled for January 2018.
