Swimmer found unresponsive near windsock off Kaimana Beach

A man found unresponsive underwater near the windsock off Kaimana Beach was rushed in critical condition to a trauma center this evening.

The Fire Department received a call about a possible drowning at 5:47 p.m. after the man was found offshore by bystanders, according to Capt. Kendall Ching, public information officer.

“Off-duty lifeguards and our personnel went out on boards to assist bystanders and we brought the adult male to the beach then started CPR,” Ching said. “They said they found him on the bottom. We don’t know how long he was under water.”

Emergency Medical Services arrived and took over care at 6:07 p.m. EMS spokeswoman Shayne Enright said the man received advanced life-saving treatment and was transported in critical condition to a trauma center.

He was estimated to be in his 30s or 40s.
