The Equality March for Unity and Pride is set for Sunday morning in Honolulu as part of an international grassroots movement that supports the LGBTQ community.
Marches will be held around the world, including in countries such as Australia, Switzerland, Canada and Spain. The events are intended to give those who support the LGBTQ community an opportunity to address concerns with recent legislation and how it negatively affects lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals.
The Honolulu march is from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and begins and ends at the state Capitol, covering about 1.1 miles.
Event officials said they will be calling for fair treatment on issues including equal housing opportunities, equal access to bathrooms and affordable health care.
A rally after the march will feature speakers such as educator and community leader Hina Wong-Kalu, educator and transgender advocate Kaleo Ramos and Rebecca Stotzer, associate professor and director of distance education at the University of Hawaii Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work.
There will also be performances from entertainers Lala Benet and Brozlyn Lechelle.
The event is co-sponsored by the LGBT Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawaii and the Women’s March on Washington-Hawaii.
