Saiki replaces Souki as House speaker
State Rep. Scott Saiki (D, Downtown-Kakaako-McCully) took the helm of the House of Representatives today after his colleagues voted 39 to 9 in favor of a resolution making him House speaker.
Three members were excused from the vote.
It wasn’t immediately clear who will take over Saiki’s position as majority leader.
The vote came after Rep. Joe Souki announced earlier today that he was resigning as speaker, a position he has held since 2013.
House members said Wednesday night that they had enough support to remove Souki and the resolution installing Saiki as leader today was expected.
Souki, 84, has served as a member of the House for more than three decades, including two turns as speaker.
