The state says the driver who killed former Kamehameha Schools football player Kaulana Werner in a hit-and-run accident in Nanakuli last year was drunk.
An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Wednesday charging
Myisha-Lee Armitage, 23,
of Ewa Beach with negligent homicide and fleeing the scene of a fatal traffic accident. Both charges are Class B felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
The negligent-homicide charge accuses Armitage of causing Werner’s death by operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Deputy Prosecutor Chastity Imamura said Armitage’s blood alcohol content was 0.13. The legal threshold for drunken driving is 0.08.
Honolulu police say
Werner, 19, was crossing
Farrington Highway near Pohakunui Avenue on April 26 when Armitage struck him. Werner was not in a crosswalk. Police said Armitage was traveling toward town and speeding. They arrested her about a half-mile from the crash site.
Werner graduated in 2015 from Kamehameha Schools, where he played wide receiver on the varsity football team. After graduation he went to Sterling College in Kansas and majored in business while continuing to play football. He returned to Hawaii after one semester to help care for his mother.
