Hawaii seemingly faced two Cal State Northridge teams on Saturday.
The CSUN squad featuring forward Channon Fluker in the post overpowered the Rainbow Wahine basketball team down low. When the 6-foot-4 sophomore went to the bench, UH put together a spirited run against the Matadors.
In the end, Fluker made the most of her 29 minutes of game action, scoring 33 points to lead the Matadors to a 60-49 win before a crowd of 716 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Fluker, the two-time reigning Big West player of the week, connected on 15 of 19 field-goal attempts, most coming deep in the paint, and the Matadors (15-11, 8-4 Big West) extended their winning streak to seven while picking up the program’s first win in Honolulu in six visits.
“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out our best offense is to get the ball inside and work from there,” CSUN coach Jason Flowers said after Fluker finished one point shy of her career high.
“We wanted her to be aggressive and obviously she can put the ball in the basket. There’s times I want her to be a little more selfish. She’s a willing passer out of there and tonight I thought she was pretty aggressive from the beginning.”
Fluker, who entered the game averaging 16.4 points, scored 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting in the first quarter but spent most of the second on the bench after picking up her second foul on Sarah Toeaina’s drive at the 8:13 mark.
The Rainbow Wahine capitalized with a 12-3 run while the Matadors struggled to score and UH took a 29-24 lead into halftime.
But a drought early in the third quarter led to a 13-0 CSUN run, with Fluker accounting for 10 points, and the Matadors pulled away with three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
Despite losing its sixth straight to close a four-game homestand, UH coach Laura Beeman said the overall performance “gave us some confidence.”
“There were moments that got away from us, but we competed tonight and we played the way we’re supposed to play basketball and we haven’t done that for a while,” Beeman said.
Guard Olivia Crawford led UH (8-17, 4-9) with 10 points.
The Rainbow Wahine shot 29 percent (7-for-24) in the second half to CSUN’s 57 percent, with Fluker going 9-for-10 after the break.
“We know she’s going to get points. What we have to do is stop everybody else, and we pretty much did that tonight, but we have to score the ball,” Beeman said. “We only scored 20 points in the second half. They didn’t do anything different to us in the second half — for whatever reason we get in this lull and can’t hit shots or turn it over.”
UH won the rebounding battle 35-28 after being dominated on the boards 55-34 in CSUN’s 11-point home win on Feb. 4. The Wahine converted nine points on 18 offensive rebounds, while CSUN had seven second-chance points on six offensive boards.
“When you get that many offensive rebounds against this type of team who normally outrebounds everybody, you have to do something with those,” Beeman said.
CSUN guard Serafina Maulupe complemented Fluker with three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Toeaina scored seven points on 3-for-14 shooting, ending her run of nine straight games in double figures.
The Wahine embark on their final road trip of the regular season this week and face UC Irvine on Thursday and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.
