The University of Hawaii football team is awaiting word on whether it will need to seek a new defensive coordinator.

Kevin Lempa, who called the defensive plays this past season, is a candidate for a non-coaching position on Michigan’s football staff. Lempa met with Wolverine officials this past weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich.

In December 2015, Lempa was hired for his second stint as UH defensive coordinator. He previously directed the Hawaii defense for three seasons through 2002, helping to develop future NFL players Pisa Tinoisamoa, Travis Laboy and Isaac Sopoaga.

Soon after agreeing to rejoin the Rainbow Warriors, Lempa said: “I’m excited to be a coordinator again. I thought this would be a great opportunity to come back and be a coordinator again. What better place to go to than Hawaii?”

But Lempa and his wife own a house in Maryland. This past fall, they became grandparents.

Lempa worked under Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown at Boston College for three seasons through 2015 and at Maryland in 2009 and 2010. Brown was hired at Michigan in December 2015. The Wolverines led the FBS in total defense in 2016, relinquishing 261.8 yards per game.

The Warriors have had four defensive coordinators since Dave Aranda was not retained following Norm Chow’s hiring as head coach in December 2011. Thom Kaumeyer was defensive coordinator for two years, followed by Kevin Clune in 2014 and Tom Mason in 2015. Abraham Elimimian, who coaches UH’s secondary, called the defensive plays in the 2015 regular-season finale after Mason was re-assigned. Kaumeyer is now a consultant for a football team in Japan. Clune and Mason are defensive coordinators at Oregon State and UTEP, respectively.

The Warriors are tentatively scheduled to open spring training on Feb. 20, although there are discussions about pushing back that start date.
