Rainbow Warriors complete road sweep at CSUN
Riding Noah Allen’s career-high-tying 34 points, the Hawaii basketball team swept its two-game road trip by winning 76-72 at Cal State Northridge tonight.
Allen hadn’t scored more than seven points in three previous road games but exploded at the Matadome. The senior shot 11-for-17 from the field and 8-for-10 from the line and reached the 30-point mark for the third time this season.
The Rainbow Warriors (11-11, 5-4 Big West) led by as many as seven points, fell behind by five midway through the second half, then closed out the Matadors (10-13, 6-4) with a strong effort in the final minutes.
That was chiefly because of Allen, who scored 64 points in the home-and-home sweep of CSUN — UH’s third year in a row accomplishing that feat. No other player scored in double figures.
But every UH player to see action contributed something, including seldom-used guard Matt Owies. Guard Leland Green was scratched from the lineup with flu-like symptoms. Sheriff Drammeh took his spot in the starting lineup.
UH led by four at halftime behind a monster 21-point first half from Allen, the senior wing’s most in any period this season.

Allen scored 10 of UH’s first 13 points, but CSUN converted repeatedly in transition to grab an early lead.
Guard Larry Lewis Jr. tied it up at 22 with a free throw and Allen gave UH its (first) lead, 25-23, on his third 3-pointer.
Zigmars Raimo extended UH’s lead to seven on a pair of free throws late in the period.
Allen kept pouring it on, reaching 21 points in the period on a backdoor cut. The ’Bows led 37-33 at intermission.
Gibson Johnson extended the lead to six to start the second half with his first two field goals, followed by Allen’s first of the period on a post-up move.
Allen stuck a putback of a missed Drammeh 3 to reach 26 points and give UH its largest lead at 46-39. Kendall Smith responded with a 3 in transition, igniting a 9-0 run that gave the Matadors a 48-46 lead.
Allen stemmed the tide momentarily with a free throw, but Reggie Theus Jr. came back with a pair at the line and Drammeh exited with his fourth foul with 9:27 to play.
Tavrion Dawson extended the hosts’ lead to 52-47 on a three-point play, but Jack Purchase ended the run with a 3. Owies hit a long 3-ball to cut the deficit to 54-53.
Dawson converted another three-point play, negated when Allen stepped back into his fourth 3 — giving him 30 for the third time in six games. Johnson and Owies converted reverse layups to recapture the lead at 60-57.
Brocke Stepteau converted consecutive baskets to extend the lead to 64-59 and Johnson took a charge on Aaron Parks at the other end, fouling the guard out with 3:39 left.
Owies went baseline for another bucket and took a charge on Smith at the other end.
Darin Johnson (team-high 27 points) drove for an and-1 for Northridge, cutting it to 66-62 with 2:02 to go.
But Allen was good on a drive and UH drained clock and got a huge offensive rebound from Gibson Johnson.
CSUN played the foul game, getting within four, but Stepteau, Drammeh and Allen made eight straight free throws to put it away. UH shot 18-for-22 at the line for the game.
UH resumes play at home on Thursday against Cal Poly.

To win two games on the road is a testament to the coaching staff and the heart of our players.
yes played good half court defense and Noah Allen carried the team on offense
Absolutely right! The Ganot haters aren’t chirping anymore. These kids just want to play and Ganot is doing his best to bring out the best in this group of young men.
It is a testament to a very easy schedule. Cal State Northridge? Do they even have a team. Too many high schools on the schedule.
You obviously don’t know anything about competitive sports. Nothing new as this is the case with most of your posts.
This team is for Real.
with ganot as coach the last 2 seasons he sure knows how to make the warriors win on the road alot, something that the coaches in the past could not do in there first two seasons. good game warriors.
Team over achieving with all the new personnel brought in for 2017. Great to see Noah Allen stepping up from a bench player and becoming a great leader. Also awesome to see the bench players contributing when called upon. Congrats to the coaching staff with putting it all together. We may not be the best team in the land but appreciate the effort.
