An iPhone foiled a 37-year-old man’s attempt to get away with a theft on a Waimanalo beach this week, police said.

Lenny Vaughn, of Waimanalo, was charged Thursday with second-degree theft. His bail was set at $11,000.

Police said Vaughn was walking along the beach at about 6 p.m. Wednesday when he took two bags containing various items. He was found about 50 minutes later via an iPhone locator and was arrested across the street from the beach on Laumilo Street.

Last month, a 25-year-old Kalihi man was charged with robbery after police said he robbed a game room on Young Street and was caught when officers tracked him down by the stolen iPhone’s locator.

Why does nobody attack the local Waimanalo culture which is responsible for the frequent criminal behavior there. Lack of discipline , responsibility and no respect for the laws.

agree…it is a bad community and, I am told, has been for a long time.Good communities do not allow anti-social behavior year after year. Too much shibai self-congratulation in ‘Nalo.

What a bunch of BS. We have had our share of our crime in our community, but HPD passes us by so the community does rally. My car got stolen, within an hour, we knew who took it just by word of mouth. Ever since they took away the recycling center crime has dramatically increased, along with the homeless population. We are considered a bad place, but all my neighbors are the nicest people and I would never leave my beautiful Waimanalo.

Anybody who talks stink about Waimanalo doesn’t know Waimanalo people. No community is perfect, and no community is without its troubled residents. This guy was probably acting out of desperation. Time to start addressing our substance abuse problems in Hawaii with help and rehabilitation, rather than immediate incarceration.

There are bad actors in every community. Following your logic or actually your lack of logic your community would be labeled dysfunctional for raising you. Your posts are consistently anti-social in nature so if you want to criticize any community for failure to nurture take it back to your mainland community.
