State Attorney General joins 16 others in opposing Trump immigration order

STAR-ADVERTISER / 2015

State Attorney General Doug Chin joined 16 other attorneys general in condemning President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration.

Hawaii State Attorney General Doug Chin has joined 16 other state attorneys general in condemning President Donald Trump’s executive order banning citizens from seven Muslim countries from entering the U.S. and suspending the admission of all refugees. The group released a joint statement today that says:

“As the chief legal officers for over 130 million Americans and foreign residents of our states, we condemn President Trump’s unconstitutional, un-American and unlawful Executive Order and will work together to ensure the federal government obeys the Constitution, respects our history as a nation of immigrants, and does not unlawfully target anyone because of their national origin or faith.

“Religious liberty has been, and always will be, a bedrock principle of our country and no president can change that truth. “Yesterday, multiple federal courts ordered a stay of the Administration’s dangerous Executive Order. We applaud those decisions and will use all of the tools of our offices to fight this unconstitutional order and preserve our nation’s national security and core values.

“We are confident that the Executive Order will ultimately be struck down by the courts. In the meantime, we are committed to working to ensure that as few people as possible suffer from the chaotic situation that it has created.”

The group represents state attorneys general from California, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Virginia, Oregon, Washington D.C., Connecticut, Vermont, Illinois, New Mexico, Iowa, Maine, Rhode Island, and Maryland.

Chin is right: Trump is not in any way legitimate and his actions announced yesterday are largely illegal. Hawaii with its historical welcoming hand should lead the way in ending Trump’s illegal actions.

Except, of course, that almost all of the incidents you have cited were actually domestic terrorists. And of the attacks on US soil from Islamic terrorists from overseas, the ban completely misses all of the countries they came from. Saudi Arabia? Pakistan? Russia, for that matter? This entire thing is security theater, at best. Any Islamic terrorists from any of the countries listed who actually had the resources to get here could still enter the US by simply flying to Canada and walking. You do realize there’s 3000 miles of forests and prairie along the northern border that is wholly unsecured?

There is an identical rise to power by Trump and Hitler. Trump has Steve Bannon as his Chief Adviser who was an executive with Breitbart News, which espouses White Supremcist, and Christian Supremcist views. Hitler and the Nazis saw the White Aryan race as superior to other races, and other races sub human species and mongrels. The Christian Evangelicals in Germany fervently supported Hitler and the Nazi Party. They helped in the persecution and arrests of Jews, Slavs, the handicap, mentally ill, infirm, homosexuals, and the political opposition. Hitler and the Nazis believed they were saving the world from the Jews and the inferior races of the world. While the Nazis and Hitler sent people to the concentration camps to be gassed and burnt, Hitler and the Germans continued to believe they were doing the work of GOD. Hitler and the Nazis observed and celebrated Christmas just as other Christians, while they murdered and exterminated millions of people, and the war they started would slaughter millions more. The Catholic Church saw no evil, and did nothing to prevent or obstruct what was happening

Trump suspends the issuing of U.S. visas or travel permits to folks from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. No American was killed inside the U.S. by anyone from those countries between 1975 and 2015.
Yet, nearly 3,000 Americans were killed by citizens from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt during those same years, including those killed in the 9/11 attacks. The citizens of those three countries can still get U.S. visas and travel permits.
Also, Trump has refused to rescind ownership of his business holdings in those countries. Conflict of interest?

There have been zero fatal terror attacks on U.S. soil since 1975 by immigrants from the seven Muslim-majority countries President Donald Trump targeted with immigration bans on Friday, further highlighting the needlessness and cruelty of the president’s executive order.

Between 1975 and 2015, foreign nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen killed exactly zero Americans on U.S. soil, according to an analysis of terror attacks by the Cato Institute.

Moreover, a report released this week shows that Muslim Americans with family backgrounds in those seven countries have killed no Americans over the last 15 years.

Similarly, none of the 19 plane hijackers on 9/11 were from any of those seven countries.

        • saywhatyouthink says:

I agree, the list should be expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain and UAE. Basically the entire middle east and northern africa.
Trump has barred people from mostly Shiite Muslim countries, he should bar people from the Sunni Muslim countries too as they are far worse. Most of the Muslim extremist groups are Sunni Muslims that adhere to the Wahhabi brand of Islam in Saudi Arabia.

IRT Allie, no, Chin is wrong. Hawaii born ex-President Obama selected the 7 Countries. The reason for ex-President Obama’s 7 Countries is that they do not have a central government to completely screen any of their citizens wanting to come to the United States. For certain, it’s not because of religion or ethnic background because there are some 40 other Muslim Countries not on the “temporary” ban.

      • nalogirl says:

“The ACLU is trying to deprive other organizations of freedoms that it would insist upon for itself. Their work is not a defense of equality—it is an effort to impose a certain view of morality on the country by law… This organization, despite its name and origins, is now committed to a version of civil rights that cannot help but erode traditional American civil liberties.

The motto of the ACLU is, ‘Because Freedom Can’t Defend Itself.’ The irony today is that freedom needs to be defended from the ACLU.”

Kim is trying to show the threat of Islamic terrorists to Americans pales in comparison to American-on-American gun violence.
She posted a screen grab of a chart with stats generated by the CDC — which shows, over the last 10 years, Islamic jihadist immigrants were responsible for 2 murders per year.
By contrast, armed toddlers kill 21 people per year. Lawnmowers kill 69, and falling out of bed kills 737 annually.
The biggest number … 11,737 Americans are shot and killed by their fellow citizens.
There is no text that accompanies Kim’s post, other than the word “Statistics.” She does not mention recent attacks, such as the San Bernardino shooting, which resulted in the slaughter of 14.

Is it any wonder Trump wants to be friends with Putin, lift the oil and gas sanctions on Russia, gut the Environmental Protection Agency, so the oil and gas industries can drill, extract, frack everywhere, off shore, on conservation land, and pipe across the middle of our country with the XL pipeline and the Dakota Access Pipeline, without any environmental review and regulation. Trump denies Climate Change and Global Warming, so the fossil fuel industries can pump and sell oil again, and increase the consumption and burning of oil and gas, to the detriment of our air, water, climate, the healthough of the people and the planet

  13. fiveo says:

Chin and his boss, Ige and the democratic ruling political elite are wrong to join this action against Trump’s move to protect our country. Not properly vetting these so called
refugee’s and others seeking to enter our country is foolhardy, especially those who are of the Islamic religion as their beliefs are totally incompatible with Western values
and Judeo Christian based laws and our Constitution. Many refuse to assimilate and want to impose their beliefs on our country such as Sharia law. Look at Europe and what is
happening there and chaos and destruction they are causing.

  14. stanislous says:

Has anyone noticed that the majority of the “refugees” are young Muslim males of military age???

  15. DownSpout says:

You may not like it, but here is the relevant law:
“Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or non-immigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.”
You may not like it, but how does Trump’s 90-day ban on people entering the U.S. from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen violate this law?

    • DPK says:

This is from Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, so it is existing law. Obama temporarily halted immigration for a period of 6 months back in 2011, so this is not a new tactic to protect Americans.

Chin has put his party before American lives. He is not fit to be the chief law enforcement officer for Hawaii. It’ll be interesting to see what these Attorney generals say after the next Muslim attack on America. Will they still want to extend constitutional protections to non-citizens? I doubt the founding fathers of this country intended to protect the rights of foreigners, some of whom would like to attack us from within if given the opportunity.

The presidents agenda is to keep America safe. Instead of our AG playing politics and trying to make Pres Trump look like some kind of religious freedom bigot, why not come up with some solutions. That’s what this executive order is all about.
The American people are tired of this banter!!!! We are especially tired of Americans being killed by Islamic Extremist on US soil!!! Come up with solutions!!!! The president has offered his out. If you have a better one, let’s hear it . Otherwise shut the hell up!!!!

  21. yhls says:

Chin’s actions along with the other mindless liberal do-gooders nationwide are the reason why Trump won the election.

  22. HOSSANA says:

Hey, Chin: Go Take A Hike and get lost!!!!!

  23. UhhDuhh says:

So many people living in fear of terrorists. They win if you let them scare you. More Americans die every day at the hands of fellow Americans than they do terrorists. Just let the homeland security, CIA, FBI do their jobs like they have since 9/11 which seems to be a good job since we have not had a major incident for sixteen years. High school sophomores were not even born when 9/11 occurred. You have more chance of being killed by a shark or a drunk driver than a terrorist. But for some of you, they got you by the you know what. Quit being a chicken and act like a fox fer cryin out loud.

  24. sukebesan says:

Political correctness and grandstanding by Governor Ige’s legal lapdog. The State of Hawaii and all other states have no legal nor jurisdictional say in a purely Federal government restrictive policy.

  25. klastri says:

WASHINGTON—Dismissing concerns that the controversial interrogation method constituted torture, President Donald Trump told reporters Thursday that waterboarding does not even come close to the excruciating torment he himself experiences at every waking moment. “Prisoners who are forced to endure a few hours of simulated drowning hardly experience the unrelenting horror that tears at my psyche night and day,” said Trump, adding that being strapped to a chair in a filthy concrete cell and repeatedly suffocated was a “stroll in the park” compared to the cruel and inhuman anguish his mind is subjected to literally every single second. “What is having gallons of water forced into your lungs compared to the nightmare that has never once released its grip on me? Waterboarding only brings a prisoner to the brink of death. I die a thousand times a day.” Trump went on to say that unlike the victims of the brutal interrogation technique, he was relentlessly tormented by the miserable fact that he deserved everything that was happening to him.

great comment–proves your point–the ONION is a SATIRACLE news paper–it makes stuff up–the other libertards must be sooooo proud.

      • klastri says:

“libertards” – of course. No matter how many times you use that very funny word …. over and over and over and over again, it’s fresh and funny every time. And so original! Very clever!

  26. BookFan says:

Thanks for upholding the Constitution Doug Chin.

    • desertpup says:

bookfan – pick up a book – maybe you will actually learn what is and is not a part of the constitution.

    • Waterman2 says:

The constitution demands that our leaders protect us…….in fact such is pretty much all they are supposed to do. Trump is the first one to try and do so in a long long time. Gotta love the man. Cojones and a big heart. Should check it out.

But the Devil has this Pavlovian reaction to goodness and we see that reaction with every curse laced protest march.
Strange times we live in. There is no doubt about the wickedness in these marches, the likes of Ashley Judd even revel in it.

      I keep coming back to 2 Thessalonians 2: 8-14.

You may be the AG for Hawaii, but you are not speaking for or representing me, I am with the majority … the 34 AG’s of the other states!

  30. Oilpan says:

Mahalo Mr. Chin for taking a stand. Proud of your action.

  31. raphaeldag says:

Good for AG Chin. There is a difference between vetting and banning. One is the obligation of a government to protect its citizens. The other is a mindless, knee jerk reaction to something you don’t understand or want to understand.

  32. Amosilatus says:

Thank you for standing up for Hawaii, where almost all of us are immigrants. I hope our congressional leaders follow your example and summon the courage to speak up against policies that are clearly wrong-headed and unconstitutional.

  33. duna6430 says:

Way to go AG Chin – let’s grandstand instead of doing your job here in our state.

  34. willman says:

Big Deal Hawaii joins in on the opposition after all Ige wanted to settle Syrian immigrants in Hawaii when he cannot even come close to solving the homeless
problem. Chin is Ige’s puppet who could not get Billy Kenoi convicted of anything.

  35. Smiley7 says:

GFN Doug Chin as COS and now as SAG. Why do we have so many girly men as the Arnold calls them? I’d choose protecting 1 American over a dozen of them. Auwe!

  36. cajaybird says:

If the Army jailed or threw out Col Hassan (the Ft. Hood shooter), the snowflakes would be protesting discrimination, and many people would be alive today. PC culture must end. We’re at war. Leading from behind won’t work.

Finally the POTUS is using common sense to govern. We feel

  38. KB says:

What ever it is do not make it political ..try not to …we will fall into the no fix trap…

  39. saveparadise says:

C’mon people. We are at war with terrorism. How can we not even agree on this fact? It is right in front your eyes everyday in the news. I guess it does not matter to you as long as it hits someone else’s home or work place. Just deny it and/or ignore terrorism like it is a common cold and it will go away by itself….right? This is a very unconventional war in which the enemy is growing and is an unseen entity until it desires to expose itself with some very dire consequences when we least expect it. Oh well…….

  40. dtpro1 says:

Not sure that our AG’s time is appropriately spent…instead of national issues of a controversial nature how about concentrating on all the great problems of this State? What have you done about overcrowding and subsequently the education of the students at Campbell High? Oh I forgot you stopped the case of the regions State Representative saying that the people do not have the right to demand changes that the failed State Bureaucracy failed to perform on a timely manner. Again we have not gotten our monies worth from the Ige administration.
