Discussions on relocating the Oahu Community Correctional Center might be coming to a neighborhood near you. A couple of open houses on the proposed replacement of OCCC will be held next week at:
>> Wahiawa Recreation Center, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, preceding a presentation to the Wahiawa Neighborhood Board at its 7 p.m. meeting.
>> Kapolei Hale Building, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, prior to a presentation at the Kapolei/Makakilo Neighborhood Board meeting at 7 p.m.
Also, a presentation will be made Tuesday at the Pearl City Neighborhood Board’s 7 p.m. meeting at Waiau District Park.
Eleven OCCC prospective sites are being explored, including one in Wahiawa and five in Kapolei/Makakilo. For more online, see dps.hawaii.gov/occc-future-plans.
Surrender your snakes, no questions asked
While Hawaii is often touted as a snake-free landscape, there are slithering exceptions. The state’s amnesty program makes it easy for someone in possession of an illegal animal to do the right thing: turn it over at any state Department of Agriculture office, zoo, or at the Hawaiian Humane Society, rather than release it into the wild. No questions asked, no fines assessed. That’s what happened over the weekend when an illegal 4-1/2-foot ball python was recovered at the Humane Society. That’s a relief: Snakes pose a serious threat to Hawaii’s environment and have no natural predators here.
