Rainbow Warriors take home Outrigger title
Sophomore opposite Stijn van Tilburg put down 18 kills en route to his second most outstanding player award as No. 7 Hawaii turned back No. 15 Ball State 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center to win the 23rd Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Invitational.
Freshman hitter Austin Matautia added 13 kills and freshman middle Patrick Gasman 11 for the Rainbow Warriors (3-0), who won back-to-back Outrigger titles for was just the second time in tournament history; the other came in 1996-97. Van Tilburg became the first play to win two MOP awards.
Joining van Tilburg, Matautia and Gasman on the all-tournament team were Hawaii senior setter Jennings Franciskovic, Ball State’s Matt Szews and Nick Lavanchy; and Princeton’s Parker Dixon.
Szews put down 13 kills to lead the Cardinals (2-1).
Dixon had 12 kills in Saturday’s first match as the Tigers (1-2) earned third place with a 25-20, 25-15, 26-24 sweep of Erskine (0-3).
