Former University of Hawaii star quarterback Colt Brennan will not have to stand trial for allegedly making a false police report.
The state dropped the case earlier this month. Brennan had been scheduled to stand trial on the misdemeanor charge this week.
Deputy Prosecutor Dean Young said, “There was insufficient evidence to prove criminal intent.”
The state had charged Brennan, 34, with false reporting for telling police in November 2015 that his car had been stolen from his home.
Honolulu police found Brennan’s car near a Kapiolani Boulevard bar. Police also recovered security video that shows Brennan parking the vehicle where they found it.
“He just didn’t remember where he parked it. He was sure he parked it at home. He never intended to make a false report,” said Michael Green, Brennan’s lawyer.
Green said Brennan has been having memory problems since suffering a brain injury in a 2010 car crash.
In 2007 Brennan finished third for the Heisman Trophy and led the undefeated UH Warriors into the 2008 Sugar Bowl. He holds the NCAA record for the most touchdown passes (58) in a season and highest career completion percentage (70.40).
