Hear that slamming? That’s the door to home ownership closing, as a double whammy blows into town — and likely across the nation.

Longtime mortgage rates are at their highest levels since 2014: the 30-year fixed-rate loan rose to an average 4.3 percent over last week’s 4.16 percent, says mortgage giant Freddie Mac, and to 3.52 percent from 3.37 percent for a 15-year mortgage.

And, as we in Hawaii have long known — and is being confirmed anew with rising property tax assessments — home prices are climbing ever higher. Expect even more people to be priced out of the housing market, especially here in paradise.

Mariota gets to the Pro Bowl, on the field this time

Just gotta love it when the stars start aligning to come full circle.

Marcus Mariota, the pride of Nuuanu Elementary and Saint Louis School, has been tapped as an alternate quarterback to next month’s Pro Bowl in Orlando, Fla. As a kid, Mariota would make it out to Pro Bowl events hosted in Hawaii — so now, he said, playing in the NFL all-star game would be “like a dream come true.”

Now in his second year, the Tennessee Titans QB is helping to make some dreams come true for the franchise, infusing the team with excitement and winning ways. Case in point: Sunday’s dramatic 19-17 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs.
