Southwest Airlines President and CEO Gary Kelly, who for several years has indicated that Hawaii was being considered for future service, said Thursday that Hawaii and Canada flights are not in the company’s 2017 plans and that right now he is committed to serving the Cuba market.
Kelly made his comments at the Wings Club in New York.
The Dallas-based carrier took delivery four years ago of Boeing 737-800 aircraft that were capable of long over-water flights and would need nearly all their range to reach the islands. Now Southwest will begin taking delivery late next year of the Boeing 737 MAX 8, which has a longer range than the 737-800.
Billionaire investor Gross facing divorce
The wife of Pacific Investment Management Co. co-founder and billionaire Bill Gross is seeking a divorce after 31 years of marriage and their joint work on a charitable foundation that gave away almost $800 million. Sue Gross said the couple have “irreconcilable differences” in a petition filed Nov. 22 in Los Angeles state court.
The couple married in 1985. It was Bill Gross’ second marriage. Their William and Sue Gross Family Foundation’s donations include a gift in January of $40 million to create a school of nursing at the University of California, Irvine. The foundation also donated $38 million to Doctors Without Borders and $23.5 million to Duke University.
Gross, 72, is worth an estimated $2.1 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
