The Democrats have only themselves to blame for Donald Trump’s victory.
If they had nominated an honest candidate, they would be celebrating now. It is a travesty that we had to choose between the two most disliked people in America.
Another travesty is Hawaii basically becoming a one-party state. Is it any coincidence we have one of the worst-run states in the union? Knee-jerk, plantation-mentality voters here don’t connect the single party to government’s inability to finish rail transit, establish interisland passenger ferry service, or even build a world-class telescope in the face of obstructionists.
Instead of giving way to new blood, our Washington politicians hold on to office with a death grip.
Hawaii’s problems will only get worse until we have a two-party system with more dauntless and imaginative statesmen.

Hawaii GOP loses candidates to Dems
Republicans keep referring to our state as having a one-party political system. They claim Democrats are responsible, but the fault is with the Republicans themselves.
Look at how many Republicans have switched parties to run as Democrats because they could not get elected as Republicans. If the Republicans had more loyal party members with electable qualities maybe we could have a two-party system.
The quality Republican candidates are gone and the party has not been able to recruit or find replacements. The local GOP chooses whom it supports and this has hurt the party in the polls. Ask yourself: Why are former Republicans able to get elected as Democrats while being unable to succeed as Republicans?

Newspaper unfair to victorious Trump
You just won’t let it go, will you? I’ve been reading in your paper about how wonderful Hillary Clinton has been for the last two years and not one word about Donald Trump doing anything right.
However, in spite of everything negative you wrote about Trump, he won. Did you say congratulations? No, you print on the front page someone saying, “He’s not my president” (“Election disaffection,” Star-Advertiser, Nov. 10).
I hope you enjoy eating crow. Maybe you should just learn to report the news and make it fair and balanced.

Government help can foster talent
I found Thomas Sowell’s column troubling (“Liberals create very problems they claim to be able to solve,” Star-Advertiser, Nov. 5).
In essence, he claimed that government extending a helping had to lift people out of abject poverty is useless and wasteful.
His column didn’t say one word about the young black boy written about in Nicholas Kristof’s feature story in The New York Times who, despite being hungry quite often, was receiving As and Bs in his school work. He expressed a desire to become a police officer, a firefighter or a judge.
Another example of a black man who benefited from affirmative action and other government assistance is one of the current justices of the Supreme Court — Clarence Thomas.
Help from government, properly organized and administered, can unearth a wealth of talent that would otherwise be lost.

Vote for Hokule‘a for national award
All Hawaiians need to show their pride. The Hokule‘a is up for an award from National Geographic based on popular vote. Right now a rock climber has 10 times as many votes.
You can vote every day until Dec 15. This is an election we can and should win.

Secret phone call nabbed burglars
In today’s world of depressing news, it was great to read, “Trio charged in robbery of massage parlor” (Star-Advertiser, Nov. 9).
Three men entered a Kakaako facility and attempted to rob the owners, who secretly called police. When the police responded, the owner told the police, “I’m being robbed.” Police captured the three armed men who attempted to escape.
