We’ve tried many of Marna Maria’s spice and herb blends and have loved every one of them. They were created by chef Brittany Burkhalter, who grew up and lives in Kailua but also lived in Paris and worked in a French vineyard. The seasonings come beautifully packaged with a card that includes a recipe and suggested wine pairings.
I particularly love the Florida Fish blend ($7), which goes so well with many of our local fishes. My husband used Marna Maria’s Dried Hibiscus Flowers ($5) for a pineapple-hibiscus cocktail that tastes like Hawaii after finding the recipe in Bon Appetit magazine (bonappetit.com/recipe/pineapple-hibiscus-cocktail). More recipes are available at marnamaria.com. — Katherine Franklin, Kailua
I have worn the navy mascara that Hollywood makeup artist William Squire has in his Billy’s Blues lines for over two years and love it, and the new lip gloss in the makeup collection, Billy’s Brilliance ($20), is the most wonderful color. It’s a pinky coral that is beautiful on all skin tones. It has a shimmery shine yet doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. I wear it alone or put it over my lipstick. I used to buy three or four glosses in different colors; now I need only one. I also like the fact that William lives in Hawaii when he is not creating makeup for his Hollywood clients. Order at Billysblues.com. — Mrs. G.E. Sullivan, Waikiki
Momo Terrascapes’ micro succulent capsules let me take a little bit of green with me everywhere I go as a necklace or cellphone charm. The 1-1/2-inch plastic capsule is strung on hemp cord and comes with a cute wooden coin and metal charm, making it a fun conversation starter for $9.75 (silver-plated necklace, $14.99). Care of the sempervivum plant is easy: Every two or three weeks, place the capsule in a quarter-inch of water and remove when the moss is half wet. To repot, pull the capsule apart.
Momo Terrascapes was founded by mother-son duo Marilyn and Chase Hamano of Aiea, who will be at the Temari Trash & Treasure Fair, Nov. 6 at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii; Diamond Head Arts & Crafts Fair, Nov. 13 at Kapiolani Community College; and Season’s Best Craft & Gift Fair, Dec. 16-18 at Blaisdell Center. The micro succulent capsules also are sold at The Wedding Cafe in Ward Warehouse and momoterrascapes.com. — Christie Wilson
When I wear my grandmother’s long, carved jade earrings, I feel like a little girl dressing up. I cherish these art deco heirlooms, but recently Lynn’s Treasures’ whimsical, sparkly jade earrings with contemporary flair caught my eye. “We shop for jade in Asia and make it into fresh, youthful-looking pieces,” said designer Lynette Shimabukuro, who makes them by hand in Honolulu with her mother’s help. The one-of-a-kind earrings — poison-green discs, water-green bamboo and infinity shapes, with freshwater pearls, multicolored crystals or vermeil tassles — start at $59. I love the idea of someday handing down a jade piece that says “me.” Purchase at Lynnstreasures.etsy.com or call 230-0826 — Mindy Pennybacker
Everything old is new again thanks to the vintage-inspired T-shirts at Malibu Shirts at Haleiwa Store Lots. The company licenses classic logos and other old-school designs to re-create gear from decades past without having to worry about it disintegrating in the wash. A recent North Shore visit turned up surfing contest designs from the 1970s, including one sponsored by long-gone airline Pan Am. The Waikiki Surf Club, Aloha Beach Services, the Lahaina Surf Club and “Baywatch Hawaii” were also represented on shirts, which are priced at about $30 each. The shop is at 66-111 Kamehameha Highway, Suite 202; visit malibushirts.com or call 744-6177. — Jason Genegabus
