Brandi Higa has signed a contract to serve as weekend sports anchor at KITV.
She will succeed Jahmai Webster, who left KITV in September for a job on the mainland.
Higa had been serving in the position on an interim basis following Webster’s departure.
She began her TV career at KITV as an intern for the news department and, upon graduation from college in Connecticut, was hired as a part-time, temporary employee in June 2009.
Higa was promoted to a full-time position in April of the following year and joined the on-air team as part of the station’s "Blitz" coverage of high school football highlights.
"She’s such a hard worker and, as a former athlete herself, truly lives and breathes the games she’s covering," said Andrew Jackson, KITV president and general manager.
"Having a local girl fill our weekend sports anchor chair is a real bonus," he added.
Higa will report to sports director Robert Kekaula, whom she describes as a mentor.
In addition to anchoring on the weekends, she will report for the sports department during the week.
Her first official day is March 15.
"I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet," Higa said Friday but added, "I’ve wanted this for a very long time."
Higa is the first female on-air member of the KITV sports department, according to station officials.
